Pharmacy Technician requirement at Indian Health Service: Location Lawton, OK, USA

This position is located in the Pharmacy Department of the Lawton Indian Hospital in Lawton, OK. Incumbent prepares medications for refills, dispensing and administration. Processes pharmacy claims online to health insurance carriers, pulls telephone refills, operates a personal computer to do daily work and restocks medications. This position is supervised by the Supervisory Pharmacist.

The IHS is required by law to give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Secretary of the Interior's definition of Indian for appointment to vacancies within the IHS in accordance with established IHS policy as outlined in the Indian Health Manual Part 7, Chapter 3. ### Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.

**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:**
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:

GS-4: Six (6) months of General Experience and Six (6) months of Specialized Experience. Specialized Experience includes skill in ordering and receiving drugs from supply department, filling work, ascertaining and replenishing needs in clinic and pharmacy supply area OR two (2) years of education above high school with courses related to the occupation.

GS-5: One year of Specialized Experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level. Specialized Experience includes skill in recognizing appropriate auxiliary earnings and packaging requirements of drugs dispensed. Assisting pharmacy staff in filling outpatient prescriptions under a pharmacists supervision. OR successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in pharmacy, or that included at least 24 semester hours in pharmacy-related courses.

GS-6: One year of Specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level. Specialized Experience includes skill in typing prescription labels, calculating doses to match physician's order with pharmacy stocks and filling prescriptions.

General Experience: (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.

Specialized Experience: Qualifying specialized experience may have been gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or in pharmaceutical firms or laboratories. Experience must have provided a basic knowledge of:
* Pharmaceutical nomenclature
* Characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals
* Pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; and the
* Variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals
OR
Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required only in those instances where it is directly related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology.

Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the GS-5 for the GS-6 grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

### Additional information

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave is earned.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.

This position has promotion potential to the GS-06 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.

MULTIPLE GRADE ANNOUNCEMENT: Announcement at the multiple grade interval is intended as a mechanism of providing consideration for the greatest number of potential candidates. This position may be filled at any level, dependent upon the applicant's demonstrated ability, experience, and other qualifying criteria. If the position is filled at less than the upper level, there is NO commitment for future promotions, based solely on selection resulting from this announcement. Conversely, if the employee demonstrates the ability to perform at a higher level, is recommended by the supervisor, and otherwise meets the qualifications, he/she may be promoted without further competition under the Area Merit Promotion Program, however for temporary positions, conversion without competition may not be possible unless the selectee was within reach at the higher grade on the initial certificate of eligible. Also, no further competition is required if it becomes necessary through the reclassification process to upgrade the position.
